Morocco held to goalless draw by Ukraine as they prepare for Iran’s clash
Despite tons of chance from both sides, they both lacked the final touch to find the net, however, Herve Renard will be delighted with his team’s performance, with multiple positives to take from the game.
The Lions of Atlas had their first opportunity of the game after 16 minutes following a delivery from Hamza Mendyl, which found Hakim Ziyech after a mistake from Ukraine’s keeper in dealing with the cross but the ball was cleared.
Seven minutes later, Ziyech had another chance to break the deadlock after meeting Mendyl cross from the left side with a half volley, but it hit the right bar.
Morocco continued their dominance in the rest of the first half and were on the verge of taking the lead in the 35th minute after a brilliant counter attack that sent Boutaib through on goal but Ukraine’s goalkeeper cleared the danger to keep both teams level after the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Morocco continued their advantage over the Ukrainians but they couldn’t translate it into clear cut chances as the play has been limited in the midfield.
Six minutes away from the final whistle, Morocco had their best chance of the half after Ziyech made a great run into the penalty area then sent a left footed strike but it was saved by the keeper.
Morocco will kick off their World Cup campaign against Iran on the 15th of June before playing Portugal then Spain.
