Shanghai Shenhua re-sign Demba Ba, release Obafemi Martins
The former Chelsea and Newcastle forward spent three seasons at the club between 2015 and 2018, before terminating his contract last January to join Göztepe.
Injuries hampered his time with Shenhua, as he only managed to make 37 appearances across all competitions and scored 29 goals, guiding them to the Chinese FA Cup final in his first season.
Demba Ba will arrive in Shanghai on June 11 for the medical examination and will sign the contract afterward, with reports claiming the Senegalese will sign a three-year deal with an annual salary of €8 million.
He will become the club’s fourth foreign player alongside Colombia’s Giovanni Moreno and Fredy Guarin, and Oscar Romero of Paraguay after the club released Obafemi Martins following a knee injury.
Former Inter Milan and Newcastle forward Martines picked up a serious knee injury in an AFC Champions League match in April, which will make him miss the rest of the season.
The injury forced Shanghai Shenhua to release the Nigerian after two-and-half-years with the club, in which he scored 32 goals in 59 appearances.
Shanghai Shenhua are currently 7th in the Chinese Super League after 11 rounds, picking up 17 points, six less than league leaders Shanghai SIPG.
