Nigeria announce World Cup 23 man squad
Nigeria have announced their final 23 man squad ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup having announced their provisional squad midway through last month.
Following yesterday’s 2-1 friendly defeat away at England, the Nigeria Football Federation have revealed the 23 men who will be travelling to represent the West African giants in this summer’s edition of the FIFA World Cup.
The squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Enyimba), Daniel Akpeyi (Chippa United) and Francis Uzoho (Deportivo La Coruna).
Defenders: William Troost-Ekong (Bursaspor), Leon Balogun (Brighton and Hove Albion), Kenneth Omeruo (Kasimpasa), Bryan Idowu (Amkar Perm), Chidozie Awaziem (Nantes), Abdullahi Shehu (Bursaspor), Elderson Echiejile (Cercle Brugge) and Tyronne Ebuehi (Benfica).
Midfielders: John Obi Mikel (Tianjin Teda), Ogenyi Onazi (Trabzonspor), John Ogu (Hapoel Be’er Sheva), Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City), Oghenekaro Etebo (Las Palmas) and Joel Obi (Torino).
Forwards: Odion Ighalo (Changchun Yatai), Ahmed Musa (CSKA Moscow), Victor Moses (Chelsea), Alex Iwobi (Arsenal), Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City) and Simeon Nwankwo (Crotone).
Perhaps most notably in the squad there is only one Nigerian based player, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, which is less than the four who travelled to Brazil in 2014 but an improvement over 2010 when there were no Nigerian based players in the squad.
Nigeria face Czech Republic in a friendly on Wednesday 6th of June before they get their group stage campaign underway on the 16th against Croatia at 9PM Egyptian time. They will then battle Iceland six days later before closing out the group stage against recurring opposition and 2014 runners up Argentina.
