Saudi Arabia suffer big defeat against Peru in pre-World Cup friendly
Egypt’s World Cup group rivals Saudi Arabia have suffered a 3-0 defeat to Peru in their preparations for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Both teams met at the AFG Arena in Switzerland, with Peru continuing their positive results, having not lost a game since their 2-0 loss to Brazil in November 2016.
Peru captain Paolo Guerrero started his first international game since June after having his drug ban delayed until the end of the World Cup and the forward marked his return to international action with two goals.
But it was André Carrillo who opened the scoreline for Peru after 20 minutes, with a left footed shot from outside the box.
Paolo Guerrero then doubled his side’s lead in the 41st minute, tapping in a rebound from Edison Flores’s saved shot.
Peru’s all-time top scorer Guerrero scored his second of the game in the 64th minute, converting André Carrillo’s cross with a header.
Saudi Arabia manager Juan Antonio Pizzi didn’t play with the main team, as the squad witnessed a number of players who are expected to be omitted from the final World Cup squad.
Their final friendly ahead of the World Cup will be against World Champions Germany, while Peru will face Sweden.
Peru were drawn in group C alongside France, Australia, and Denmark. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia will be opening the World Cup against Russia after being drawn in group A alongside the hosts, Uruguay, and Egypt.
