John Barnes: Ibrahim and Hossam Hassan were very violent
John Barnes spoke about the 1990 World Cup when England faced the last Egyptian team to qualify to the biggest football competition.
Liverpool legend John Barnes was part of the English squad that faced Egypt 28 years ago in the World Cup and he had a few thoughts to share on the Egyptian team especially Ibrahim Hassan and Hossam Hassan.
“In that match I faced Ibrahim Hassan, he and his brother Hossam were very violent,” Barnes told beIN Sport satellite channel.
“We played against a team that was organised, strong and disciplined, with a tough fighting spirit and a strong desire to win.
“Some people expected us to win with five or six goals, but after seeing Morocco in the 1986 World Cup we knew it was not going to be easy,” he added in a documentary about Egypt’s history at the World Cup.
Mark Wright scored the winner to give England a 1-0 victory over Egypt in their final Group F game. It was the result that kicked the Pharaohs out of the competition after they managed to pull two draws against Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland.
Egypt are currently preparing for their first World Cup appearance since 1990 as they were drawn in Group A alongside Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and hosts Russia.
