Abouelkassem and Aya Medany win gold at African Fencing Championships

Egyptian fencers are having a great start at the 2018 African Fencing Championships after and won two gold medals in the women’s epee and men’s foil titles.

Olympic modern pentathlete and fencer Aya Medany snatched gold when she defeated fellow Egyptian Nardin Ehab 15-13 in a thrilling duel at the El Menzah Sports Palace in Tunisia, to become the women’s winner while Ehab earned a silver medal.

Medany reached the final match after beating Gbahi Gwladys Sakoa of Ivory Coast 9-8 while Ehab managed to defeat Tunisia’s Ines Boubakri who later shared the bronze medal with Sakoa.

On the men’s side, London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Alaaeldin Abouelkassem reached the first step of the podium as he won the gold medal in the men’s foil following a smooth 15-4 victory over Tunisian fencer Mohamed Ayoub Ferjani.

Egypt’s Mohamed Essam won the fourth medal for the Pharaohs sharing bronze with Algeria’s Hamid Sintis.
