Portuguese manager Jose Gomes set to take over at Al Ahly – Report
The managerial seat at Al Ahly has been vacant since the resignation of Hossam El-Badry, who is now close to land the job at Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel.
El-Badry has resigned following a run of disappointing results, which saw Al Ahly get knocked out from Egypt Cup as well as losing to Kampala FC in the Champions League.
A number of managers have been linked with the Red Devils since then, with former Al Taawoun and Al Ahli boss Jose Gomes being the most recent name.
According to Maisfutbol, Gomes has reached an agreement with Al Ahly’s board and is currently on his way to Cairo for the official announcement.
Jose Gomes has previously managed a number of Arab clubs, including Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun and Al Ahli, as well as Baniyas of UAE.
The 47-year-old was assistant to former Zamalek boss Jesualdo Ferreira at FC Porto, Malaga, and Panathinaikos.
He also took charge of Hungarian side Videoton, Portuguese side Paços Ferreira, Aves, Leixões, União Leiria, and Moreirense.
If successful, Gomes won’t be the first Portuguese to be named as the Red Devils manager, as Manuel José, Toni Oliveira, and José Peseiro led the Egyptian side before.
Manuel José is considered to be one of the most successful managers in Africa, having won four CAF Champions League titles, six league titles, four CAF Super Cups, two Egypt Cups, and more.
