Kouka: Players stood by me and Salah was shocked by my omission
Striker Ahmed Hassan Kouka says Egypt’s main star Mohamed Salah was shocked after Hector Cuper snubbed him, and that being sidelined last season with Braga might have affected the coach’s decision in omitting him.
In an interview with veteran Ahmed Shobair for Sada El Balad, Kouka spoke about his last season with Braga and how his teammates and especially Salah reacted to his snub from the World Cup final squad.
“I am a football player. I do not care about what is said on social media. I always fight to prove myself on the pitch.
“The season was tough, I always had problems with the coach [Abel Ferreira]. Every weekend, I find him leaving me on the sideline and when I ask him about it, he tells me he wanted to give a chance to others!
“I do not know whether I will continue with Braga or not, I have offers but I have not thought about them yet.
“The players stood by me after the decision on the final squad, I hope nobody experiences what I felt after the announcement of the team’s final 23. Salah called me and was shocked by the decision too.”
The decision to leave Kouka out was a huge shock as the player took part of Cuper’s troops, in the African Cup of Nations and in the World Cup qualifiers.
Egypt are going to the World Cup with Marwan Mohsen as the only striker, while the likes of Amr Warda and Mahmoud Kahraba likely to be given a chance to play as an unorthodox no 9 in case Mohsen isn’t fit.
