Uruguay’s Varela to miss Uzbekistan friendly through injury
Uruguay’s right-back Guillermo Varela will miss out his side’s friendly with Uzbekistan ahead of the World Cup through injury.
Uruguay were drawn in Group A at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. They will kick off their campaign against Egypt, who will be making their first World Cup appearance in 28 years, on June 15. They will then play against Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia on June 20 and June 25.
Uruguay will play their only friendly ahead of the world football’s showpiece event against Uzbekistan early on Friday. The 25-year-old will be left out of the game after sustaining a thigh muscle injury, according to a statement by the Uruguayan Football Association.
It remains unclear whether the Peñarol defender will be available for his side’s game against Egypt in a week.
Varela made only three appearances for the Uruguay national team, as he made his debut against Poland in a friendly in November 2017 before playing two other friendlies against Czech Republic and Wales in March.
