Uruguay beat Uzbekistan 3-0 ahead of Egypt World Cup clash
Uruguay defeated Uzbekistan 3-0 at Montevideo on Thursday night in their final warm-up ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
They kicked off their only friendly game before they take off to Russia with their usual starting line up. The squad saw the exclusion of right-back Guillermo Varela who’s sidelined by a muscle injury.
The first 20 minutes of the game witnessed few chances from both sides. Although the Uruguayans controlled possession, the shots on target remained few.
Around the half-hour mark, Giorgian De Arrascaeta gave Uruguay the lead with a powerful effort following good work from Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the South Americans were awarded a penalty for a handball inside the box. Suarez stepped up and converted from the spot to double the lead.
Jose Gimenez headed a corner to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute. Uzbekistan were reduced to 10 men with 10 minutes to go, as Akramjon Komilov was sent off for a direct tackle on Carlos Andres Sanchez.
The two-time world champions will meet up with Egypt in their opener game in Russia on June 15, before playing against Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia on June 20 and June 25.
