Mohamed ElShorbagy and Nour El Sherbini win Dubai World Series finals
El Sherbini got today’s proceedings underway against El Welily in something of a rivalry in recent months, having played each other six times in 2018 alone. The pair are comfortably the two best players currently, with El Sherbini being at the top of the rankings for over two years now, while El Welily is the current world champion.
After an evenly matched start with the first two sets going either way, El Sherbini began to pull away in the third set before completing the job in the fourth set with the final scores at 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5. The win means that Nour El Sherbini has won the Dubai World Series for the first time in her distinguished career.
Following on from El Sherbini’s win, it was time for reigning champion ElShorbagy to take on Ali Farag. Farag appeared to get off to a dream start, winning the first set, however ElShorbagy’s class began to show as he won the following three sets to claim the overall win with the final scores at 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-8.
The result means that ElShorbagy retains his title having beaten James Willstrop in last year’s final.
