Russia suffer injury scare ahead of World Cup
Russia midfielder Yuri Zhirkov has suffered a World Cup injury scare after picking up a minor foot injury during his side’s training session.
The 34-year-old, who has over 80 international caps, is set to feature in his second consecutive World Cup, after being included in Russia’s final 23-man squad.
He suffered a minor foot injury just one week before the World Cup opener, which will see his side face Saudi Arabia at Luzhniki stadium.
However, Russian Football Union spokesman Igor Vladimirov assured that the former Chelsea player is fine and will be available for the World Cup.
“He is fit and well, everything is fine,” Igor Vladimirov said.
Zhirkov trained individually in the gym before resuming full training with the rest of the squad on Friday.
Russia were drawn in group A alongside Egypt, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. They kick off their campaign against the latter on June 14, before facing Egypt and Uruguay on the 19th and 25th of June respectively.
