Junior Ajayi keen on Sporting Lisbon move – Report
The 22-year-old has been a revelation for Al Ahly since joining from Tunisian side CS Sfaxien in the summer of 2016, scoring 21 and assisting 18 in 71 appearances.
He helped the Reds win two league titles, one Egypt Cup and the Egypt Super Cup and is considered as one of the club’s key players.
His impressive form attracted the attention of Sporting Lisbon, who reportedly asked their director of football and former Zamalek manager Augusto Inacio to seal the move.
However, Al Ahly newly appointed director of football Mohamed Youssef stressed that the foreign trio Walid Azaro, Ali Maaloul and Junior Ajayi are unsellable.
And according to Complete Sports Nigeria, Ajayi respects the club’s decision but will still hold talks with the board in order to find a solution to the problem.
“He (Junior Ajayi) is desperate to join Sporting despite the insistence of his club to hold on to him,” a source close to the player told CSN.
“The problem is that Ahly sold some of their key players recently and they don’t want him to leave for now.
“He respected the decision of the club but will sit down with them to find an amicable solution to the issue as he wants to test himself in Europe after a successful spell in North Africa.
“He is travelling back to Cairo today (Sunday) and hopefully they will sort things out,” he added.
While Sporting did not have much luck with their previous signings from Egypt, with Shikabala and Rami Rabia failing to impress during their time there, they do have good experience in signing Nigerians from Egypt
Emmanuel Amunike was signed from Zamalek in 1994 and went on to have a successful spell in Portugal. He was also the last Nigerian to play for the club, meaning Ajayi has the potential to continue a tradition of Nigerians moving from Egypt to Sporting.
