Giménez urges Uruguay to be attentive against Egypt
Atletico Madrid and Uruguay defender José María Giménez has warned his teammates they must remain vigilant when they face Egypt in their 2018 World Cup opening game in Group A.
Uruguay and Egypt have been drawn in the World Cup’s Group A along with the hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia, whom will face off in the showpiece event’s opening game on June 14.
The upcoming World Cup edition will be La Celeste’s third participation in a row after their campaigns in 2010 and 2014, while Pharaohs will mark a historical third appearance after 28 years of absence.
“It [Egypt] is a strong side, especially in defence. They close very well behind and they go on the break with a lot of pace,” Giménez told the press on Monday.
“We have to be efficient with the goalscoring chances we get and be vigilant in the back when we lose the ball. It is a team that played the entire qualifiers closing down in the back and breaking on counter. We will study them more thoroughly these days.”
Egypt might enter their first World Cup encounter without Uruguay without their star Mohamed Salah, who is working hard along with the medical staff to make himself at Hector Cuper’s disposal, but the Atletico Madrid central defender believes he will make it.
“For them he [Salah] weighs a lot. I think Salah is going to play, and we prepare for the game putting that into consideration. He will be marked as any other player of that level, with much concentration and discipline, because he can be deadly if defended carelessly.”
