FIFA Ranking: 14

Fixture date: 15/6/2018 (Central Stadium, Yekaterinburg)

Group A’s highest ranked team, Uruguay have at the World Cup 13 times. Champions in both 1930 and 1950, La Celeste have only placed as high as fourth place since 1950. After controversially beating Ghana in the 2010 quarter-finals and finishing in fourth, Uruguay were knocked out of the competition at the Round of 16 after losing to Colombia 2-0. A new year, Uruguay have been heavily favored to win the group, but could expect Spain or Portugal in the Round of 16.

Since the draw was announced, the South American nation have just featured in three friendlies including two games as part of the 2018 China Cup. La Celeste won each of their games against Czech Republic, Wales, and Uzbekistan scoring six goals and not conceding a single goal. With heavyweights such as Cavani and Suárez, Uruguay will be a team people will keep an eye out as a possible dark horse. However, the team’s performances in recent competitions, especially Copa America 2016, have worried the Uruguayan faithful.

Expected Line-up:

Key Player: Luis Suárez – Uruguay’s all time top scorer, Suárez has also been at the center of controversy in the last two World Cups. His season for Barcelona was not consistent for the usually prolific scorer, but with 31 goals to his name this season it’s hard to argue against his ability.

History against Egypt: Uruguay and Egypt have faced just once before in August 2006 with La Celeste winning 2-0.

Trivia: Before this edition of World Cup qualifying, Uruguay had finished fifth in the previous four campaigns (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014).
