2018 FIFA World Cup: An updated look at Egypt’s Group A opponents
FIFA Ranking: 70
Fixture date: 19/6/2018 (Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg)
A participant in the last World Cup, Russia finished in third place in Group H behind Algeria and Germany and ahead of South Korea after drawing two games and losing the other. The 2018 edition will be this year’s hosts fourth appearance after featuring in 1994, 2002, and 2014.
Russia have played four friendlies since the World Cup draw in December, losing three against Brazil, France, Austria, and drawing Turkey with Fyodor Smolov and Aleksandr Samedov scoring their two goals. Since they had already qualified to the World Cup as hosts, Russia’s last competitive match came at the 2017 Confederations Cup where they finished in third place of Group A collecting three points from their win against New Zealand, before succumbing to losses against Mexico and Portugal.
Key Player: Sergei Ignashevich – Having originally retired from international football, Ignashevich returned just last month as a replacement for Ruslan Kambolov. As Russia’s most capped player in history, his experience will be vital to the hosts.
History against Egypt: The match at the World Cup will be the very first meeting between Russia and Egypt.
Trivia: Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia have never advanced past the group stage at the FIFA World Cup.
