Ali Gabr suffers injury scare, expected to be fit for Uruguay game
Egypt international defender Ali Gabr has picked up a facial injury during the Pharaohs’ training session on Tuesday.
Ali Gabr was named in Hector Cuper’s final 23-man squad and is expected to start in the World Cup alongside club team-mate Ahmed Hegazi.
He went to have an x-ray following the injury, and scans confirmed that the injury is not as bad as feared and that the defender should be available for the Uruguay game.
His absence would have been a massive blow for Egypt, and Hector Cuper is surely pleased that Gabr will be fit for the Friday game.
Cuper’s other defensive options are Ahmed Hegazi, Saad Samir, Ayman Ashraf, and Mahmoud El-Wensh, with the last two lacking international experiences.
Egypt were drawn in group A alongside hosts Russia, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. They will kick off their campaign against the South American side on June 15, before facing Russia and Saudi Arabia respectively.
