Héctor Cúper: Egypt is not Mohamed Salah’s national team
The Argentinian is highly criticized for depending too much on Salah in attack and Egypt is seen as a one-man team for many people.
Salah got injured during the UEFA Champions League final and it is still unsure whether or not he’ll be available for Egypt’s opening game in the World Cup on June 15.
“We’re not Mohamed Salah’s national team, this team has many players who cooperate with each other to reach the best results,” Cúper told MBC Masr TV channel.
“Egypt is lucky that this generation has one of the best players in the world but our tactics don’t solely revolve around him.
“Argentina also has Lionel Messi, can we tell them not to play him? This doesn’t happen.
“I understand that the fans sometimes prefer things to be done in a different way and like when Salah performs well, a goalkeeper or a defender can save us from a dangerous opportunity and there is a midfielder that can run a lot for the benefit of the team.
“The most important thing is that the team finds a good balance in its performance, ” he added.
Egypt were drawn in Group A alongside host Russia, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. They will face La Celeste on June 15, they will then face Russia and Saudi Arabia on June 15 and June 19 respectively.
Saudi Arabia also have an Argentinian manager in Juan Antonio Pizzi and Cúper was asked about what he feels about facing his compatriot.
“I don’t have a heart when it comes to competing. I just want to win,” Cúper said.
“If I face Argentina I would still play to win, I worked here for three-and-a-half years and I’m Egyptian, all I want is to lead Egypt to victory,” he concluded.
