Héctor Cúper: It was hard for me to exclude some players out of the squad
Cúper surprised many by not including the likes of Ahmed Hassan ‘Koka’ and Karim Hafez, especially after the duo have been included in his squad for the past couple of years.
The exclusion of ‘Koka’ was especially criticized as the Argentinian only included one striker in the squad heading to the World Cup.
“It was hard for me to exclude some players,” Cúper told MBC Masr tv channel.
“When I look at the squad and don’t see some players who were with us in the last period, I feel bad and it is possible that I made some mistakes in my decisions, I am human.
“But excluding a player means including another one and if it was for me I would have included all the players.
Cúper was then asked who is the player he would’ve liked to take with him to the World Cup.
“It’s hard to choose because I might forget some, but there are some injured players such as Rami Rabiaa and Ahmed El-Shennawy,” he added.
“Risks are always present, but before I include a player I have to know how he’ll suit the national team’s style of play.
“There are some players who are good with there teams, but they have to suit the national team’s style of play first in comparison with what’s available now and the most important thing is the team’s interest.
“I think that this was the perfect moment for him to retire, but I think he could’ve played a couple more years,” he concluded.
Hossam Ghaly, who was part of the Egypt squad that won the 2010 AFCON, won 74 international appearances, with the last one coming against Nigeria in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers.
He also played two 2018 World Cup qualifiers, captaining Egypt to 4-0 win against Chad, which led Egypt to the group qualifiers.
