El-Shennawy hoped to keep clean sheet against Uruguay
Egypt lost 1-0 to Uruguay in heartbreaking fashion as Jose Maria Gimenez scored a towering header in the dying minutes following a phenomenal defensive performance from both sides.
The Pharaohs played the entire 90 minutes deprived of the services of their star player Mohamed Salah. But the game saw the shining of Al Ahly goalkeeper who put an astonishing display to stop Lo Celeste from scoring, until Gimenez late winner which he had no chance in saving.
“I am glad to start against Uruguay. I prepare for games as strong as El-Hadary and Ekramy and all of us are on the same level,” El-Shennawy said after the game.
“I hoped to end the game with a clean sheet but God willing things will be better in the future. I thank the technical staff that helped preparing me psychologically throughout our training camp.”
Egypt will face hosts Russia in the second round of group stage and will aim to redeem themselves and obtain a positive result.
