Diego Godin: Egypt great opponent

captain has praised the Egyptian national team following their victory in their 2018 World Cup Group A thanks to Jose Maria Gimenez.

Uruguay managed to clinch their first three points at ’s cost with a late winning header from Atletico Madrid defender Gimenez.

“I am happy. I expected this kind of game against an opponent that gave a lot of effort and play with discipline,” Godin told reporters after the game.

“We won the first game which was so difficult. We beat a stiff opposition and the opening games are always difficult. It was a complicated encounter. We played a big game and created a lot of chances, we faced a great team and their goalkeeper was in top form. However, the most important thing is the result in order to progress to the next round.”

Uruguay will face Saudi Arabia in matchday two of Group A, while Egypt will meet Russia.

    It was great to watch a game with essentially no violence, just two good teams playing hard. Now Egypt has to think, with confidence, of its nex game. Congratulations to Egypt and the “Charruas”

    Godin was immense in that game. If he wasn’t playing I think we could have scored but he put in such a dominating performance and thwarted us every time. My hats off to a great competitor.
