Hector Cuper ‘disappointed’ following late defeat to Uruguay
Egypt national team manager Hector Cuper has revealed he is heartbroken after his side’s late defeat against Uruguay in the first round of the World Cup.
The Pharaohs were close to earning a point in their World Cup opener, but a last-minute header from Jose Gimenez earned a massive three points for Uruguay and made Egypt leave the game empty-handed.
Hector Cuper said he is pleased with his players’ performances, but couldn’t hide his disappointment after the late defeat.
“It was a tough game against a big opponent. It’s heartbreaking to concede from a set-piece, but I am pleased with our performance,” Cuper said following the Uruguay game.
“We have done everything possible in this game against a big opponent with giant forwards and good defenders. That’s why we are disappointed.
“We know that they are set-piece specialists, but I am happy with my players,” he added.
The Argentinan manager also spoke about Mohamed Salah, who remained on the bench, saying: “Mohamed Salah is an important player for us.
“We preferred not to risk him and instead leave him for the upcoming two games,” he added.
Egypt are currently third in group A behind Russia and Uruguay, with their next game taking place against the hosts on Tuesday, June 19.
