Senegal defender Saliou Ciss ruled out of World Cup
Following a an ankle injury Senegal defender Saliou Ciss has been ruled of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and will not take part of his team’s squad.
The left back got injured after a friendly played last month against Luxembourg and is not yet fully recovered. Caen defender Adama Mbengue is expected to replace Ciss in Senegal’s squad.
Ciss plays for Ligue 1 side Angers and has helped his team secure survival as they finished 14th in the standing last season.
The Senegal Football Federation have announced in a statement: “Saliou Ciss can no longer participate in the World Cup because of a serious injury that occurred during our team’s preparation,”
The decision to replace the injured player came this late as teams are only allowed to replace players 24 hours before their opening games.
Senegal will face Poland in their first World Cup appearance since 2002, when they defeated France in the opening game and went on to play in the quarter-finals of the competition.
The Teranga Lions are joined also by Japan and Colombia in the group and their coach is the youngest in the tournament, Aliou Cisse who used to be the captain of the 2002 squad in their only previous World Cup participation.
