Saudi Arabia team land safely at Rostov after plane fire

Saudi Arabia

’s national team have landed safely after an engine on their plane caught fire in mid-air as they travelled to Rostov for their second World Cup game.

The Saudi side are scheduled to face Uruguay in their second group game on Wednesday. The Green Falcons will be hoping to get a positive result after their 5-0 heavy defeat to hosts Russia in the tournament’s opening game.

A video taken from on board, was posted on social media, showing fire coming from beneath one of the wings of the Rossiya Airlines plane carrying the Saudi team. The airline explained in a statement that the preliminary cause for the incident was that the plane suffered a technical fault after a bird flew into one of the engines.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation announced that the team have arrived safely in Rostov. “All the Saudi national team players have arrived safely in Rostov-on-Don this afternoon to play against Uruguay, and currently are staying in their residence, and that the fire was merely an accident,” the statement, posted by the Saudi federation on Twitter, read.

The federation clarified that the plane isn’t carried out by the Saudi Arabian airlines. “[It] was provided by the IATA organizational committee for the teams participating in the World Cup,” the statement added.

Uruguay, who edged Egypt 1-0 in their opening game, are currently levelled on three points with Russia, who will be facing the Pharaohs on Tuesday night. The final group games will see Russia face Uruguay and Egypt play against Saudi Arabia on June 25.
