Referees appointed for Saudi Arabia vs Egypt
Egypt’s dead rubber to close out the group will be officiated by Wilmar Roldan as well as a full team of Colombian officials on the pitch with Alexander Guzman and Cristian De La Cruz being assistant referees while the fourth official is Ricardo Montero. Japan’s Hiroshi Yamauchi will also be deployed as the reserve assistant.
In the 2018 World Cup so far, Roldan has only officiated the Group G game between England and Tunisia in which he awarded a penalty to Tunisia for a Kyle Walker elbow on Fakhreddine Ben Youssef, however more notably he did not award a penalty to England despite the hauling down of Harry Kane from multiple set pieces.
Roldan also carries vast experience, having refereed the encounter between Mexico and Cameroon in the 2014 World Cup however that match was also marred by controversy as two Mexico goals were wrongly ruled out for offside, which is less likely to be an issue now due to the advent of VAR.
The match with nothing more than pride at stake will take place on Monday 25th of June at 4PM Egyptian time, and will take place simultaneously with Uruguay vs Russia which will decide the group winner.
