Ahmed Elasfar and Ahmed Elmasry pick up karate medals
Elasfar picked up his medal in the +84kg category which was won by the Algerian Holine Daikhi, while Elmasry finished third in the 84kg category behind Jessie Da Costa of France and the Macedonian gold medalist Berat Jakupi.
The medals put Egypt in fifth place in the medal table, just behind hosts Spain, Turkey, Serbia and the frontrunners Italy. This means that Egypt are currently on par with the overall performance at the previous edition of the tournament in Mersin, Turkey, in 2013.
Egypt also performed well in karate in the previous edition of the tournament, with Mohamed Ali (60kg silver), Magdy Mohamed (67kg bronze), Ahmed Solyman (75kg bronze) and Mohanad Mohammad (+84kg bronze) all backing up Hany Keshta’s 84kg gold in a successful campaign.
The 2018 Mediterranean Games will continue until Sunday July 1st, with Egypt hoping to improve on the 2013 appearance.
