’s national team manager has insisted that the team is focused on the final group match against rather than looking ahead to the round of 16.

Having beaten Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the opening two games, scoring 8 goals in the process, Russia are already guaranteed a place in the round of 16 on home soil where their opponents will be one of Spain, Portugal or Iran, depending on the results on the final day of Group B.

Despite their scintillating start, Russia’s head coach insists that they are more focused on the match against Uruguay than the round of 16 itself, as that will decide which team wins the group and which team finishes in second place.

The 54 year old said “We don’t have any preferences concerning the playoff [opponent] – it’s the football God who decides. We haven’t actually thought about any other match apart from our match against Uruguay”.

“This is the World Cup. The team must be ready for tomorrow’s match. We’re facing a good team, and we need to do our job. Obviously, we have qualified for the round of 16… This game will be a warm-up ahead of the round of 16. But we want to be the first [in ], and we need to achieve result in the game”.

Cherchesov went on to speak about the Egypt game, adding “We were threatened by Salah, but nobody managed to [beat Russia]. Tomorrow’s match will have a completely different level, intensity and quality. And we’re getting ready for it… It depends both on us and on the opponent if we succeed or not”.

Russia face off against Uruguay on Monday 25th of June at 4PM Egyptian time, simultaneous with Egypt’s dead rubber against Saudi Arabia.
