Former Zamalek player Abdelraheem Mohamed passes away

, who was a pundit on Nile Sports for the clash between and Saudi Arabia, passed away from a heart attack after the match.

A part of ’s 1970 and 1980’s beloved squad, Abdelraheem Mohamed was best known for his positive attitude on and off the field. His kindness and politeness was second to none and was admired for his love for the White Knights.

One of his most memorable moments in a Zamalek jersey was his goal against Al Ahly from a great counterattack which started with a save from Adel El-Maamour on November 28, 1980. The match ended with a 2-0 win for the White Knights with Ahmed Abdel Halim scoring the first goal.

After his retirement, Mohamed held multiple coaching positions, but returned to Zamalek to be assistant coach on two occasions. His first period as assistant coach came in 2009 under Frenchman Henri Miche. Abdelraheem Mohamed came back to Zamalek in 2014 during Ahmed Hossam Mido’s first spell. The former Zamalek coach took to Twitter to remember Mohamed’s influence on him not just as a player but also as a coach.

Reflecting on asking Mohamed to assist him in 2014, Mido said:

“In the beginning of my coaching career and even though he [Abdelraheem Mohamed] was my coach when I was 13 years old, I asked him to be my assistant and he immediately agreed. He told me that I will do everything to help you become a coach for Zamalek’s sake. Even though he was older than me by more than 30 years, he did not spare me from his experience or love for Zamalek.”

Abdelraheem Mohamed passed away in the hospital and was with former Al Ahly keeper Ahmed Fawzy and former spokesperson of the EFA Azmy Mujahid.
