Egyptian national team arrive in Cairo without five players
The Egyptian national team have returned to Cairo after their 2018 World Cup campaign in Russia ended following three defeats in three games.
The Pharaohs crashed out of the group stages as they ended up being bottom of Group A with zero points, with Russia and Uruguay making it through to the last 16.
Their first World Cup in 28 years looked to be a disastrous one, after a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay, followed by a 3-1 loss to Russia and a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia left them bottom of the group.
After their defeat to the latter, the national team left Russia on their private plane and returned to Cairo. However, they were missing five players.
Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny, Wigan’s Sam Morsy, Kasimpasa’s Mahmoud Trezeguet, West Brom’s Ahmed Hegazi, and Aston Villa’s Ahmed Elmohamady all didn’t make the flight back to Cairo.
The Pharaohs will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing World Cup display as they prepare for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers that start in September.
