Two Egyptians win medals in wrestling events at Mediterranean Games

Mohamed Elsayed and Haitham Mahmoud won silver and gold medals respectively in their events at the .

Mohamed Elsayed competed in the men’s Greco-Roman 67 kg event and started the Mediterranean games by beating Greece’s Apostolos Manouilidis in the quarter-final 9-0. In the semi-finals the 20-year-old defeated Syrian Abdwlkarim Alhasan 7-0. In the gold medal match, however, Elsayed lost to Frenchman Yasin Ozay 5-7 and won the silver medal. Before his silver medal in Tarragona, the Egyptian participated in the African Championships and won the gold medal in the junior Greco-Roman event.

Haitham Mahmoud beat Moroccan Anwar Tango in the quarter-finals of the men’s Greco-Roman 60 kg event before beating Croatian Ivan Lizatovic 4-2. Mahmoud went on to win the gold medal after beating Turkish Elcin Ali 9-7 in the final. The 26-year-old previously won two gold medals at the 2014 and 2015 African Championships but was eliminated from the 2016 Olympics after losing the first bout.
