OFFICIAL: Wahbi Khazri joins Saint-Etienne from Sunderland
Khazri joined Sunderland in January 2016 from Girondins Bordeaux, but only made 42 appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats, as he spent last season on loan at Stade Rennais.
The 27-year-old was keen on leaving the English side following their relegation to the League One, and today he has put pen to paper on a four-year contract that will keep him at Saint Etienne until 2022.
The Tunisian becomes Saint Etienne’s first summer signing as they want to bolster their squad after finishing seventh in the Ligue 1.
“At 27, Wahbi has reached maturity,” Saint Etienne sporting director Frederic Paquet said.
“He not only led his team to the finals of the World Cup but he also managed to show his great talent in a high-profile group where Tunisia faced two of the semi-finalists,” he added.
Khazri started his career in France with Bastia, representing them for five years before moving to Bordeaux in 2016, where he made 64 appearances before moving to Sunderland.
He spent last season on loan at Stade Rennais, helping them finish fifth in the Ligue 1 table and qualify for the Europa League.
He was also part of the Tunisia team that played in the 2018 World Cup, scoring two goals and assisting further two against Belguim and Panama.
