Mahlambi named in Al Ahly’s league squad after Ajayi’s injury
The Red Devils have been dealt a significant blow after Junior Ajayi has suffered a serious knee injury during Al Ahly’s 1-0 win over Township Rollers on Saturday.
The injury has forced the Nigerian out of the game before the end of the first-half and Al Ahly’s director of football Mohamed Youssef has confirmed that the player will be out of action for as long as four months.
Ajayi underwent MRI which confirmed a rupture in his medial collateral ligament and will be put on the waiting list.
Youssef has also announced that the club has decided that South African winger Phakamani Mahlambi will replace Ajayi in the club’s squad for 2018/2019 Egyptian Premier League season.
Mahlambi was so close to leaving Al Ahly this summer and was linked with a return to South Africa, however, Ajayi’s injury has revived the 20-year-old’s Al Ahly career.
He joined Al Ahly last summer from Bidvest Wits, scoring once and providing five assists in 15 appearances since then.
The defending champions will start their league campaign with a difficult test against rivals Ismaily on Thursday, August 2 at Borg El-Arab stadium.
