Egyptian FA: Aguirre to be presented as Egypt coach on Thursday
Aguirre has been appointed as Egypt’s new national team manager following the dismissal of Hector Cuper last month.
The 59-year-old was included in a four-manager shortlist set by the EFA featuring Jorge Luis Pinto, Quique Sánchez Flores and Vahid Halilhodžić, but the final choice of the associations board members fell on the former Japan coach.
The EFA have affirmed that Aguirre’s official presentation as Egypt boss will take place on Thursday, August 2 in a press conference that will be held by the association president Hany Abou-Rida in the EFA headquarters.
The veteran manager will become the first Mexican to take charge of the Egyptian national team, and the only second north American after Bob Bradley of USA.
Aguirre managed Mexico in two World Cups, 2002 and 2010. He was also at the helm of Japan in 2014. On club level he coached Osasuna between 2002 and 2006, then Atletico Madrid in 2006 before leaving his post in 2009. Real Zaragoza and Espanyol successively in the period between 2011 and 2014.
In the middle east, the new Egypt manager took over UAE club Al-Wahda in 2015 and until 2017. Mexican Primera División with Pachuca and UAE President’s Cup and League Cup with Al-Wahda are the other trophies he won during his managerial career.
