Hamza Mendyl has signed a five-year deal with last year’s Bundesliga runners-up, becoming the club’s six summer signing after deals for Suat Serdar, Omar Mascarell, Salif Sané, Steven Skrzybski, and Mark Uth.

The Moroccan has agreed to join Domenico Tedesco’s side after both clubs reached an agreement over a transfer fee of around €7 million.

He follows his compatriot Achraf Hakimi, who also moved to the Bundesliga, but joined Borussia Dortmund on a two-year loan from Real Madrid.

News of the signing has been welcomed by manager Domenico Tedesco, who has hailed Mendyl and revealed what he expects from him.

“We have been monitoring Hamza for a while now and are very happy to have closed the deal. He provides exactly what we want from a left back – athleticism, dynamism, solidity and attacking impetus,” Tedesco said.

Mendyl has also revealed his delight with the move, saying: “I’m delighted to have signed for such a big club.

“With Domenico Tedesco, I’ve got a coach who is renowned for improving players. He showed that clearly last year.

“I want to keep developing under him and help Schalke lead great campaigns in all three competitions this season,” he added.

Hamza made his professional debut in February 2017, and has made a total of 13 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille last season.

He also featured in three cup games for Lille, whose youth academy signed him from the Academie Mohammed VI in Morocco in 2016.
