Karim Hafez joins İstanbul Başakşehir on one-year loan with option to buy
İstanbul Başakşehir have completed the signing of Egypt international Karim Hafez on a one-year loan from Wadi Degla and have an option to make the transfer permanent.
The 22-year-old left-back has spent the last three seasons on loan from Lierse at Cypriot giants Omonia Nicosia, and Ligue 2 outfit RC Lens, before making a return to Egypt joining again his former club Wadi Degla.
He leaves Wadi Degla without making a single appearance to join İstanbul Başakşehir on loan, with the Turkish side having the option to buy him permanently at the end of his loan spell.
Hafez becomes the club’s fourth summer signing after deals for Milos Jojic from FC Koln, Akhisarspor’s Soner Aydogdu, and Yaren Sozer from Melbourne City.
He will have a fight on his hands to get a starting spot at his new club, with the club having former France, Arsenal, and Man City left-back Gaël Clichy as well as Alparslan Erdem.
Karim also becomes the only second Egyptian in the Turkish Super League alongside Mahmoud Trezeguet, who plies his trade at Kasimpasa.
Hafez, who has seven caps to his name, was left out of the Egypt World Cup squad by Hector Cuper and also failed to make Javier Aguirre’s squad for the Niger game in the 2019 AFCON.
He will hope that the loan spell helps him reclaim his place in the Pharaohs squad, especially with the presence of Mohamed Abdel-Shafy, Ayman Ashraf, and Mohamed Hamdy.
