Surprise inclusions as Javier Aguirre names local-based squad
Egypt manager Javier Aguirre has announced his squad of local-based players for the Pharaohs’ encounter against Niger in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.
The Niger game will be Aguirre’s first game in charge after he was appointed as Egypt manager around a month ago, succeeding Hector Cuper.
Aguirre had already called-up 13 foreign-based players, before announcing a list of another 13 local-based players, which saw some surprising inclusions.
Mohsen has been called up to the senior team for the first time, while it becomes Mohamed Hany’s first international call-up since January 2016. Hany has won two international caps against Jordan and Libya during Hector Cuper’s tenure.
Zamalek duo Tarek Hamed and Mahmoud Gennesh were also called up as well as Al Masry forward Ahmed Gomaa, Hossam Hassan of Smouha, and Pyramids’ Ali Gabr.
The Mexican manager has also handed a surprise call-up to El-Dakhelya winger Islam Gaber following his impressive performances in the opening rounds of the Egyptian Premier League.
The Pharaohs are currently on a nine-game winless run, having not won a game since their 2-1 win over Congo last October.
The 13 local-based players:
Mohamed El-Shennawy, Ayman Ashraf, Mohamed Hany, and Salah Mohsen (Al Ahly), Tarek Hamed and Mahmoud Gennesh (Zamalek), Baher El-Mohamady and Mohamed Sadek (Ismaily), Ali Gabr and Mohamed Hamdy (Pyramids), Ahmed Gomaa (Al Masry), Hossam Hassan (Smouha), Islam Gaber (El-Dakhelya).
