Hussein El-Shahat admits his desire to join Al Ahly

Hussein El-Shahat

Al Ain’s winger discussed the national team’s upcoming clash with Niger and spoke about his desire to join Egypt’s Al Ahly.

The 26-year-old, who has been called up for Egypt’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger by new head coach Javier Aguirre, assured that this game will be very important for the team as it is the first game after the World Cup.

“We’re aiming to win our next matches in the qualifier to qualify on top of our group,” Hussein El-Shahat told ON Sport TV channel. “The way the players perform during the game is the most important aspect right now.”

The midfielder also spoke about his controversial tweet which was posted after Egypt’s disappointing performances during the World Cup in which he said that he’s grateful for not being part of something that he was looking forward to.

El-Shahat did not make it to Hector Cuper’s final squad list that went to the World Cup. Some criticized El-Shahat’s for his tweet claiming that he was hinting at the national team’s failure in Russia.

“This was not about the World Cup, we qualified after 30 years so how can I not be happy for not being part of the squad even I was only going to sit on the bench? I wish everyone would think differently,” he explained. “The tweet was about something personal, that’s it.”

Since joining Al Ain last January, El-Shahat scored nine goals and provided 15 assists in 18 games and was voted the fans’ player of the year. He has shown his worth in the UAE football helping his team to the domestic double.

According to previous reports, Al Ahly were not able to reach an agreement with Al Ain to sign the player. And even though El-Shahat said before that playing for Al Ahly will remain his dream, he announced his full commitment to the UAE side.

“I certainly would love to play for Al Ahly, but I am committed to a contract with Al Ain,” he said. “I have big goals with Al Ain. I’ve gained respect from everyone in the team and we’re taking part in a number of tournaments this season which we are aiming to win.

“My departure to Al Ahly is currently unlikely,” he concluded.
