Elmohamady speaks about differences between Cuper and Aguirre

Ahmed Elmohamady

captain expressed his satisfaction after the Pharaohs were able to easily defeat Niger 6-0 in the second round of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.

The Pharaohs thrashed Niger at Borg El-Arab stadium, scoring six goals as they aim to recover from their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier loss against Tunisia.

“We were playing on our home ground and with our fans, we deserved the victory and the result,” Elmohamady told ON Sport TV channel after the match. “We could have scored 15 or 16 goals in the first half of the game.”

“The team was doing great in the first half when it came to defending and attacking,” he added. “In the second half, we were not as good but we scored three goals. It is a great result for Aguirre’s career with Egypt.”

Elmohamady also spoke about being named the national team captain, pointing out that despite the usual talks from the media about this topic, the captain badge will remain an internal conversation.

Essam El-Hadary served as the Pharaohs’ captain for a while, however, he has announced his retirement from international football recently.

And his vice-captains Ahmed Fathi and Sherif Ekramy were also excluded from the squad that will face Niger, which forced Aguirre to name new captains for the Egyptian national team.

“The badge goes to senior players and there are no problems between the players because of this system,” he explained. “Aguirre settled this since day one in the training camp, and if he said in the next camp that Mohamed Salah or Ahmed Hegazi will lead the team no one will have a problem with that.”

Arsenal midfielder  has been named as Elmohamady’s vice-captain, and would be backed up by  and .

“Being captain is not just about wearing a badge, it about leading the team on and off the pitch. The staff makes such decisions and we accept all their orders warmly,” he said.

As for the difference between former national team coach Hector and current coach Javier Aguirre when it comes to playing style, Elmo said that Cuper belongs to a more defensive style, unlike Aguirre.

“With Aguirre, I get more attacking roles, and I think most of the squad play in a similar way with their clubs which will help them easily apply this style with the national team,” the Aston Villa player concluded.
