Liberia president George Weah returns to national team at age of 51
George Weah, who was named the 1995 World Footballer of the Year, retired from football in 2003 after an eventual career which saw him play for Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, AC Milan, Manchester City, and Chelsea.
His popularity saw him being elected President of Liberia in the 2017 election, swearing in as president on 22 January 2018.
And on Tuesday, Weah made his first international appearance for Liberia in 16 years, featuring for 79 minutes in his side’s 2-1 home defeat by Nigeria in Monrovia.
Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo put Nigeria in front, before the hosts pulled one back through a penalty which was converted by Kpah Sherman.
Liberia arranged the friendly to retire their number 14 shirt, which was worn by the legendary forward during his playing time.
Liberia are currently fourth in group G of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, which also include Zimbabwe, DR Congo, and Congo.
