Mahmoud Trezeguet loses Player of the Year award to Bafetimbi Gomis
Egypt international Mahmoud Trezeguet has lost the Player of the Year award for the 2017-2018 season to former Galatasaray forward Bafetimbi Gomis.
The Kasimpasa winger was nominated for the award alongside Burak Yılmaz, Emre Belözoğlu, Garry Rodrigues, and Bafetimbi Gomis.
His impressive performances last season earned him the nomination as he managed to score 13 goals and provide seven assists in 31 league games as his side finished eighth.
However, former France international Bafetimbi Gomis was the one to scoop the award after guiding Galatasaray to the league title, scoring 29 goals in 33 league games.
Gomis will hope to replicate this form with Saudi giants Al Hilal, whom he joined last summer for €6 million.
“Thank god for everything, I am happy to be present at the ceremony of choosing the best in Turkish football,” Trezeguet told beIN Sports.
“I thank my teammates for everything, and I hope to shine this season as well.
“The atmosphere here is great. I am happy to be in the Turkish Super League and I hope to be present in next season’s award ceremony,” he added.
Despite being nominated for the POTY award, Trezeguet failed to feature in the team of the season, with all the other four nominees making the team.
The former Al Ahly winger lost his place to ex-Beşiktaş midfielder Talisca and İstanbul Başakşehir winger Edin Višća.
Galatasaray’s manager Fatih Terim was named the manager of the year, with Portugal international Ricardo Quaresma clinching the Goal of the Year award.
