Cristiano, Messi have caused problems for Salah, says Liverpool legend
Legendary Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler suggested that Mohamed Salah has suffered problems of unfair comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after matching their goal-a-game record last season.
Salah has scored three goals for the Reds this season so far, however, the Egyptian winger didn’t have a promising start as expected after his impressive form the past campaign, where he scored a career-high 44 goals.
Fowler suggested that Salah and Tottenham Hotspur target man Harry Kane have been on the end of an unfair comparison to Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, believing that such level of expectation will never be matched by the Premier League duo.
“The problem they have is that they both put themselves into that Messi-Ronaldo bracket by getting close to the goal-a-game level last season,” Fowler told The Mirror.
“Yet that’s unsustainable for the very best unless you play for Barcelona or Madrid, with a team on a different level to everyone else,”
“It will be interesting to see what Ronaldo does over the course of a season now he’s at Juve. I suspect it won’t be a goal a game and not just because he’s getting older,” Fowler exclaimed.
The former Manchester City striker has expressed his confidence in Salah’s ability to keep scoring goals for the Reds pointing out that it doesn’t make him worse if he scores less goals than last year.
“I’m not saying it’s a one-off, but, generally speaking, I just don’t think you should be comparing anyone to those two.”
“Salah will get goals this season. But if he doesn’t get 45, then it doesn’t mean he’s a worse player, just that things have leveled off. Same with Kane,” the 43-year old concluded.
