defender has officially announced that he will represent in the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

Morel, whose father is Malagasy, was born in Lorient and started playing for the city’s B team in 2002. He received promotion to the senior team and remained at the club until 2011, before joining Marseille where he spent four years ahead of joining Lyon in June 2015.

The 34-year-old has not featured for France in any friendly or official game, which encouraged him to contact Madagascar coach Nicolas Dupuis to inform him that he is eligible for Barea after the team made history claiming their spot in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time after the team defeated Equatorial Guinea in the fourth round of the qualifiers.

“I confirm that I will proudly participate in AFCON 2019 in the colours of Madagascar,” Morel said in a post on Twitter.

“It will make you [people] smile or grind but no matter what, you do not deny your family background when they call you and I put my affection where I want.”
