HANDBALL: Cairo derby set for Champions League final
Al Ahly will face arch-rivals Zamalek in the 2018 African Handball Champions League final following victories over GS Pétroliers and JS Kinshasa respectively.
This marks the second Cairo derby in the African Handball Champions League final after both sides met in the final of the 2012 version, which the Reds won 21-17.
Zamalek beat DR Congo’s JS Kinshasa 30-25 in the semi-finals on Saturday, three hours before Al Ahly thrashed record 11-time title holders GS Pétroliers 27-20.
The news meant that Egyptian clubs are guaranteed their 17th title in the tournament, making Egypt the most titled country in the history of the competition.
Zamalek have won the title 10 times before, with Al Ahly winning it five times, while Portsaid SC lifted the title once in 1990.
Also, every final has witnessed at least one Egyptian team since 2011, with Al Ahly and Zamalek featuring seven times, winning five out of them.
The game will take place on Sunday, October 28 at 19:30 CLT.
