Kasongo earn Zamalek victory over Ittihad of Alexandria
After the Egyptian sides were drawn against each other in an all-Egyptian encounter, the two clubs were eager to prove their domination and score in the first half of the game. However, both teams failed to translate any of the chances they made to goals.
ّIn the 69th minute, Congolese striker Kabongo Kasongo was able to take advantage of a low cross from Hamdi Nagguez and score his side’s only goal.
Kasongo’s goal was controversial after television replays showed that Nagguez was in an offside position before sending his cross.
With this goal, Kasongo equalled Emmanuel Amuneke’s record 20 goals for Zamalek, becoming joint-third foreign goalscorer in Zamalek’s history. He now has 20 in 47 with a ratio of 42.5%.
Ittihad of Alexandria tried to return to the game and score an equalizer but the White Knights were able to stop Ittihad’s ambitions and secured an important victory that helped them put one foot in the quarter-finals.
Both sides will clash again for the second-leg game at Petrosport stadium in Cairo on Friday, November 30.
