VIDEO: Late Marwan Mohsen equaliser saves Al Ahly from loss to Al Wasl
Marwan Mohsen’s last-minute strike has saved Al Ahly from a loss to Emirati side Al Wasl in the round of 16 of the Arab Club Champions Cup.
The first-leg took place at Borg El-Arab stadium, with the game being Al Ahly’s last one ahead of the CAF Champions League final against Esperance on Friday.
The visitors were the more dominant side in the first-half, and they nearly opened the scoring through Caio after the Brazilian went through on goal, but El-Shennawy managed to deal with the ball easily.
In the 34th minute, Lima’s free-kick nearly found El-Shennawy’s net, but the Egypt international parried the ball away with a brilliant diving save.
Four minutes later, El-Shennawy suffered an injury and was replaced by Sherif Ekramy.
Ahmed Fathi managed to break the deadlock after his cross from a free-kick went directly inside Al Wasl’s net, making it 1-0 before the end of the first-half.
Al Wasl severely punished Al Ahly with two late goals in the second-half through Caio and Lima in the 83rd and 86th minutes respectively.
The Emirati side thought they got the win, but Marwan Mohsen managed to score the equaliser in the 95th minute to end the game 2-2.
The return-leg will take place in Dubai on November 22, with the Reds needing to win with any result to advance to the semi-finals.
