October 2018 KingFut Pharaoh of the Month: Walid Soliman

This month’s  award, which recognizes the best Egyptian athlete of October 2018, goes to winger Walid Soliman.

Four months ago, news was circulating about a potential move to Saudia Arabia. Last week, he proved his worth to the Red Devils by guiding them to the CAF Champions League Final next Saturday against Espérance Sportive de Tunis. It is at those times that experience plays a very vital factor in scoring decisive goals at the right time.

With his blistering speed and unexpected solo runs, it is fair to say that Soliman was able to fill in the gap of the injured Junior Ajayi in the Champions League.  The 33-year-old found the net three times and assisted twice during October. Two of those goals came in the semifinal against ES Setif.

In the CAF Champions League semifinal against ES Setif, Soliman’s first goal of the month gave the Reds a vital lead in Cairo, heading in a brilliant cross from Ahmed Hamoudi. Ahly went on to win the match 2-0 awaiting the second leg at the State 8 de Mai 1945.

In their only league clash of the month, Al Ahly suffered an unexpected 4-3 loss against Ittihad of Alexandria. Despite the result, Soliman managed to reduce the deficit in the 61st minute, when Islam Mohareb found him inside the box. The number 11 winger then headed the ball brilliantly past Ittihad’s goalkeeper, keeping the Reds’ hopes alive.

El Hawy’s best performances came against ES Setif in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal, when he sprinted past the Algerian defender and smashed the ball into Moustapha Zeghba’s net, ending the Black Eagles hopes of reaching the final match. ES Setif managed to pull two goals in the game, but it was too late as Al Ahly snatched the ticket to their 12th Champions League Final with a 3-2 aggregate win.

Despite his outstanding performances with Al Ahly, has not been called to the national team under newly appointed coach, Javier Aguirre. Hany Ramzy, the national team asssistant coach has stated that the reason behind Walid’s exclusion was due to his old age. Yet, Soliman’s quality and experience with the Reds recently has proved that age is just a number.
