Christian Gross apologies to Zamalek fans following Ittihad defeat
Zamalek won the first leg 1-0, then lost the second leg with the same result which led to penalty shootouts where the White Castle lost 4-3.
“We were unable to make the most out of the opportunities we had in the last 40 yards,” Gross said in his post-match press conference.
“We weren’t efficient enough to score goals and in the meantime, in defence, we made one mistake that cost us the goal.
“No one was in their normal level in attacking area, and Ittihad of Alexandria defended really well throughout the game.
“I apologise to the Zamalek fans for getting knocked out of the competition. I am very sad and we need to be fully concentrated in the next period.
“I will talk to the players and ask them not to be affected by what happened and to seriously prepare for the Al Masry game.
“Defeat is always possible in penalty shootouts and no player is fully responsible for the defeat. Mahmoud Alaa never missed a penalty before the Ittihad game,” he concluded.
Ittihad of Alexandria are now in the quarterfinals of the tournament as the only Egyptian representative after both Egyptian Zamalek and Al Ahly have been knocked out.
