EFA admits difficulty in hosting 2019 AFCON instead of Cameroon
Last week, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially stripped Cameroon off their hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations which will be played in June 2019.
South Africa and Morocco are tipped as favourites to host the tournament, and if the latter want to bid for the hosting rights, Egypt won’t challenge them.
“The EFA will not bid to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations if any fellow Arab countries do so,” EFA board member Ahmed Megahed said on Tuesday.
However, Megahed left the door open, adding: “Egypt are ready to step in and help if there any problems.”
Egypt have hosted the tournament four times in 1959, 1974, 1986 and 2006, winning it three out of these four times. Overall they have won it a record seven times.
Meanwhile, the tournament took place in Morocco only once in 1988 and South Africa hosted it twice in 1996 and 2013.
