VIDEO: Al Ahly open CAF Champions League campaign with narrow victory
Cairo giants Al Ahly have beat Ethiopian side Jimma Aba Jifar 2-0 in the first-leg of the first round of the 2019 CAF Champions League.
The Reds were drawn against the Ethiopian champions, with the first-leg taking place at Borg El-Arab, before both sides meet in Ethiopia next week.
Al Ahly’s early heavy press caused problems for the visitors and it didn’t take them long to open the scoring as Nasser Maher belted the hosts into an eighth-minute lead.
Ahmed Hamoudi had a glorious chance to double his side’s lead, when he sent Maher’s low cross over the bar.
Minutes later, Hamoudi played a great ball to Marwan Mohsen, who turned Aba Jifar’s defender, before putting the ball past the goalkeeper, making it 2-0.
The visitors had huge chance to score their first of the game as their forward went through on goal, but he sent the ball to the stands.
Al Ahly had two chances in the early minutes of the second-half, but Mohamed Sherif and Marwan Mohsen’s headers couldn’t find the net.
The game didn’t see many chances until the final 10 minutes, which saw Al Ahly continue wasting numerous chances through Mido Gaber, Marwan Mohsen, Walid Soliman, and Karim Nedved.
Both teams will now meet once again next Friday, with Al Ahly needing to win or draw by any result to secure their place in the group-stages.
