Elmohamady scores an own goal as Aston Villa draw with Preston North End
Preston had the opportunity to break the deadlock after just two minutes when Jordan Storey volleyed Paul Callegher’s corner but it hit the bar.
The hosts had an other opportunity to break the deadlock in the 33rd minute through Graham Burke, however his volley was brilliantly denied by Villa’s goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.
Five minutes later, Anwar El-Ghazi could have scored for the visitors after great effort on the left side but his final touch went very wide.
In the final minutes of the first half, Tammy Abraham scored his 14th goal of the campaign to put Villa in front after a great delivery from Glenn Whelan.
Villa started the second half with a faster tempo and could have doubled their lead through a couple of chances but they failed to translate.
In the 60th minute, Preston brought the score level when Lucas Nmecha squeezed Johnson delivery’s home but it got deflected on Elmohamady to find its way into the net.
Villa had better advantage over the rest of the half but they failed to get anything more out of the game as the final whistle came with both sides sharing the points of the tie.
Villa remained in the ninth position with 37 points, five away from playoff places. The Villans are hosting QPR on New Year’s Day.
